VA psychologist to staff: don't diagnose PTSD in returning veterans        (Story below)

I'm looking forward to the day that the federal government makes it a crime to harass the PTSD disabled;  on the same level of Sexual Harassment or the harassment of any physical disability.
Estimates now say that there are 300,000 new PTSD veterans

If the federal government gave Equal Justice on this, they would be in trouble.  They are the biggest harassers.   Ask almost every PTSD veteran, who has had to battle through the Veterans Affairs system.  "Battle" is probably an under statement.   The below link is just part of the battles facing America's new PTSD vets.

The VA medical staff are great;  however, the VA administration harass PTSD veterans on a large scale.    Please call your members of Congress and ask them to investigate the overall treatment of PTSD Veterans.

VA psychologist to staff: don't diagnose PTSD

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/triage/2008/05/va-psychologist.html

A furor has erupted over a psychologist’s email directing staff at a Texas veterans facility to withhold diagnoses of post-traumatic stress disorder from soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

In the email, Norma J. Perez, PTSD program coordinator at the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Center in Temple, Texas, tells staff “given that we are having more and more compensation seeking veterans, I’d like to suggest that you refrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out.”

Instead, she advises “consider a diagnosis of Adjustment Disorder.”

Veteran Affairs staff “really don’t ... have the time to do the extensive testing that should be done to determine PTSD,” Perez wrote.

VA Secretary James Peak immediately called Perez’s email “inappropriate” and insisted that it didn’t reflect VA policy, the Washington Post reported Friday. In a statement, Peak said the staffer’s action was “repudiated at the highest level of our health care organization.”

Oddly, Peake indicated that Perez – a psychologist – was staying in her job, after becoming “extremely apologetic” when counseled.

That infuriated people writing comments at the Washington Post’s Web site, who called Perez a “no good dirt bag” and recommended that she be given “100 lashes” and “fired for dereliction of duty.”

What’s at stake is veterans’ ability to get disability and health care benefits from the VA. A diagnosis of “adjustment disorder” doesn’t deliver the same level of benefits as would a diagnosis of PTSD, Paul Sullivan, the executive director of Veterans for Common Sense, told CBS news.

“VA staff across the country are working their hearts out to get our veterans the care they need and deserve,” U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) told CBS. “But emails like these make their jobs far more difficult.”

The chairs of the House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committees promised Friday to investigate the matter, and Sen. Barack Obama (D.-Ill.) called Perez’s email “outrageous” in a statement calling for a probe.

Rep. Bob Filner (D-Calif.), who heads the House committee, said he wanted to know whether the Texas psychologist was acting on orders. “Where is she getting it from,” Filner said he wanted Peake to explain, according to the Associated Press. “Why is she saying this? Who is giving her the order?”

VA spokewoman Alison Aikele told the AP Friday that Perez was just making a suggestion. “We’re not aware of any other instances where this happened,” Aikele said.

Just last month, the Rand Corp. released a report estimating that about 300,000 soldiers who served in Iraq or Afghanistan have PTSD or major depression. And last week, a separate furor arose over yet another series of emails that appeared to indicate that VA officials didn’t want to disclose the number of veterans who commit suicide – as many as 18 a day, according to some estimates.

Have you or a family member had trouble getting a diagnosis of PTSD from the Defense Department or the VA? What do you think of the way soldiers are evaluated for these conditions?

E-mail from VA worker says to avoid PTSD diagnosis

WASHINGTON (AP) — An internal e-mail written by a Veterans Affairs Department employee suggested avoiding a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder for veterans and instead considering a diagnosis that might result in a lower disability payment.

A copy of the e-mail was distributed Thursday by the groups Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a congressional watchdog group, and VoteVets.org. The e-mail dated March 20 had been forwarded to VoteVets.org, an Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans lobbying group opposed to the Bush administration's handling of the war and veterans issues.

The name of the sender and the recipients were blacked out by the groups. The e-mail has the subject title "Suggestion."

"Given that we are having more and more compensation seeking veterans, I'd like to suggest that we refrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out. Consider a diagnosis of Adjustment Disorder, R/O PTSD," the e-mail said.

It also said, "Additionally, we really don't or have time to do the extensive testing that should be done to determine PTSD."

VA Secretary James Peake issued a statement calling the e-mail sender's suggestions "inappropriate" and said the employee had been repudiated and was apologetic. The VA did not release the name of the employee.

"We are committed to absolute accuracy in a diagnosis and unwavering in providing any and all earned benefits," Peake said. "PTSD and the mental health arena is no exception."

Just last week, Peake was called to Capitol Hill to answer questions about internal e-mails that surfaced during a trial that seemed to suggest VA officials were hiding the number of veterans trying to kill themselves. One e-mail started with "Shh!" Some lawmakers have said the official who wrote it should be fired, but Peake has said he has no plans to do so. Peake promised to make the agency more open.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder that can occur after a traumatic event such as war. Nightmares, flashbacks, and substance abuse can be among the symptoms.

A recent study by the Rand Corp., found that that about one in five troops who found in Iraq or Afghanistan have symptoms of major depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Jon Soltz, an Iraq War Veteran who is chairman of VoteVets.org, said some veterans have suspected they received a diagnosis of an adjustment disorder instead of the correct diagnosis of PTSD because the payout to them would be less.

"Many veterans believe that the government just doesn't want to pay out the disability that comes along with a PTSD diagnosis," Soltz said in a statement, "and this revelation will not allay their concerns."

---------------------------------------------

It is time for the federal and states governments to give the PTSD disabled,

the "reasonable disability accommodations" that they deserve.

The federal and state games should stop now.

HOW  MANY  VETS  HAVE  TO  KILL  THEMSELVES?

Forgetting politics, with 300,000 new PTSD vets, the federal government must protect these men and women and give them "reasonable disability accommodations" I wish the two parties would work together on this.  These kids should not have to want to kill themselves.

A real David vs. Goliath story.

Serving as a  PRO SE, Superior Court plaintiff,  a PTSD disabled veteran convinced Honorable Judge Ronald Graves that a high level Supreme Court Official and his law firm committed Legal Malpractice.   Over the objection of this high level Supreme Court official, Judge Graves determined that the disabled vet's charges and evidence "warrants the Law Division for damages."     When the disabled veteran asked the court for a transcript of Judge Graves' decision, he was notified by the court clerk that part of the court transcript was (strangely) missing and could not be reproduced."    Read some of the court filed letters by pressing here.   This missing court transcript helped this corrupt, high level Supreme Court official and his corrupt law firm to get away with Legal Malpractices charges and Attorney Ethics charges.    This state courts' COVER-UP is still going on.       PRESS  HERE  FOR  EVIDENCE

Back in December 2000, I tried to get the New Jersey Supreme Court to understand what PTSD was like.  In the end, these people I asked for help, used my PTSD against me.  If the New Jersey Supreme Court used it to mock me, it is understandable that the average American still might think of it as a sign of weakness...
